How to choose a dog food

For a four-legged pet to be healthy, cheerful and playful, it needs to be fed properly. Choose the best large breed puppy food. We will tell in our material how to choose high-quality and useful food for a dog.

We choose a class

Ready-made dog food by quality is divided into 4 classes.

Economy class – inexpensive feed, which instead of meat uses bone meal, animal fat and soy, the composition includes flavors, artificial additives and preservatives. If you often feed your dog this food, it can lead to a deficiency of vitamins and amino acids.

Premium feeds consist of meat, fish, poultry, offal, plant components and rice. They are more expensive, but more useful, they do not contain soy, and the content of harmful additives is minimal.

In feed super premium is only natural meat, they are perfectly balanced allowing for the breed, age and other characteristics of dogs. Most often sold in veterinary pharmacies and pet stores.

The main difference between holistic feeds – they specifically indicate the meat of which animals, fish, or poultry was used, whether there are animal fats. The main source of vegetable protein in holistic feeds is brown rice, lentils, and peas, as well as various herbs, berries, fruits, and vegetables. Thanks to such ingredients, the animal receives a full range of vitamins and fiber for the balanced functioning of the digestive system.

Age and breed

Puppies burn 2-3 times more calories a day than adult dogs. But they need to build muscle, strengthen bones and teeth!

That is why their feed should be rich in protein, which will support the growth of tissues and organs, the required amount of minerals and vitamins (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron).

Food for puppies of small breeds differs from food for puppies of large breeds. Babies should not be overfed, so they are made easier food, and large puppies it is important to grow harmoniously, so their food will be more calcium to strengthen the paws.

Helpful Hint: The smallest puppies weaned from their mothers first need a milk replacer (up to two months) and only then specialized food.

As for adult dogs , they need proteins, fats of animal and vegetable origin, minerals, vitamins and carbohydrates.

In older dogs, metabolism slows down, they become less active, expend less energy, so they need fewer calories. As they feed less fat, but is digestible carbohydrates – energy sources. Minerals strengthen aging joints, vitamins and protein help support the immune system and fight infections.

Infeed for dogs of small breeds more protein, fat, and carbohydrates for added energy. The croquettes themselves are also smaller in size – it is more convenient for a dog to chew such food.

Dogs of large and giant breeds have a serious appetite: they are able to swallow food without chewing and gain weight.

Representatives of such breeds grow older and age faster, so it is very important to choose the right diet for them. Croquettes in food for large dogs are large, the fat content in them is reduced, and protein – increased. It helps control weight, reduce strain on joints and vital organs, and glucosamines strengthen joints from within.

Every dog loves treats, for their preparation use dried beef entrails. Raw skin is used for the dog’s masticatory bones. You can also pamper your four-legged friend with fresh beef and pork ears.

What is in the feed

In good food, the main thing is the composition, which is written on the package and it must be read carefully.

The first in the list is the product that is most in the composition, ideally in this place should be meat ( chicken, turkey, beef ). If your dog has allergies, take food with lamb or salmon.

The words “poultry meat” or “offal” mean that the feed can be used waste: feathers, leather with wool, etc. Of course, offal includes the internal organs of animals, useful in the nutrition of the dog, so the manufacturer of good food will not hide which ones.

The composition of the feed must include fats and carbohydrates. The largest amount of carbohydrates in cereals, potatoes and carrots. Useful cereals – brown rice and barley. White rice is much less useful. Corn is poorly digested and can be a source of allergies.

In dog food, animal and vegetable fats contained in corn, soybeans, etc. are used. Do not forget that high fat content leads to obesity and cardiovascular disease, and high protein content – to various kidney diseases.

Eggs are best in the form of a whole egg, not egg powder. It is good if the feed contains fruits, berries, vegetables, herbs, minerals, vitamins, probiotics.

Natural preservatives – vitamins E and C, oils, and herbal extracts. Synthetic preservatives can cause liver damage, allergies, and even cancer. Usually, the manufacturer tries to hide information about synthetic preservatives under the designation EWG (these are E320, E321, and propyl gallate).

Therapeutic and preventive feeds

Therapeutic foods are recommended for pregnant women, weakened after recovery and surgery, as well as old and prone to weight gain dogs.

Therapeutic feeds differ from everyday ones in composition: each disease has its own set of substances. For example, dog food, which is recommended for cardiovascular disease, increased potassium, magnesium, sodium, taurine, L-carnitine, and minimized sodium and chlorine.

If the dog has a food allergy, with the help of a special hypoallergenic food  you can reduce the intensity of symptoms: itchy skin, ear infections, hair loss, etc.

Aging, inactive and large breed dogs are prone to obesity. Overweight dogs develop diabetes, diseases of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

The transition to anti-obesity food will help maintain good health: it contains reduced fat content but retains all the necessary nutrients and minerals. And light food will help to adjust the weight of the pet, will support aging inactive dogs in optimal shape.

During pregnancy, dogs also need quality and balanced nutrition, so it is better to offer special options for pregnant and lactating dogs. Conventional foods are not able to meet the needs of expectant and nursing mothers who need extra protein and calories.
